The black oil model is used for simulating dry gas, water and non volatile oils while the compositional model is best suited for light oils, condensates and natural gases. Any reservoir fluid could be described using a compositional model which allows more detailed analysis of the fluid behavior. Some black-oil models allow spatial variation of stock-tank oil density, γ API (x,y,z), where black-oil properties are correlated in multidimensional tables as a function of pressure and γ API. Across barriers such as faults and sealing shales, discrete PVT model data may be defined, such as EOS parameters or black-oil tables; such "discontinuous" fluid descriptions may cause physical and model incompatibilities if fluids mix in the reservoir or at the surface. In this paper we analyze the black oil model often exploited for petroleum reservoir simulation. This model is a simplified compositional model for describing multiphase flow with mass interchange between phases in a porous medium. It consists of three phases (gas, oil, and water), can predict compressibility and mass transfer effects, and Phase behavior is relevant to every aspect of petroleum and natural gas engineering. According to the complexity of the reservoir fluid phase behavior, reservoir modeling is classified under two distinct groups: black-oil simulation and compositional simulation. ; Often times, it is safe to assume that reservoir fluid behavior is only a function of pressure and independent of composition.
